We move from event to event, from news to news, from reaction to reaction. The day is measured by the number of tasks, messages, and signals. The horizontal is chronology, sequence, and extension in time. It is a mode in which the body carries us forward faster than consciousness can process a single step.

This mode allows us to orient ourselves, respond, and survive. Its nature is to maintain duration. Here, it is important that tomorrow comes after today, that tasks are completed, that the siren ends, and the next hour begins. The horizontal is held together by the tension of expectation.

But the horizontal is not just a calendar and a to-do list. It is noise. It is the anxiety that lives in the chest as a fine vibration; the fine sand of everyday life that settles on the skin, in memory, in dreams. It is the feeling of a constant “further,” even when you are standing still. In this mode, a person easily becomes a function of events: consciousness reacts quickly, but rarely manages to stop.

The horizontal almost never questions depth, as its logic is one of continuation. However, depth is not another dimension of time. It is a halt within movement. It is a memory that does not obey chronology, and an inner center that remains motionless while news rages around it. In the Neoplatonic sense, this is the axis – a movement directed toward the One, rather than forward into an infinite sequence of events. Not unfolding outward, but gathering into the center.

The vertical is a different mode of existence.

The vertical does not cancel the horizontal, it does not deny events, and it does not abandon time. It changes the direction of attention. If the horizontal moves forward, the vertical is directed upward – into the intensity of being.

It is a constant inner orientation. Not a flash, not ecstasy, but an invisible axis running through daily life. One can perform tasks, listen to the news, and answer messages – while simultaneously feeling a subtle tension within, as if something in you is always rising above the circumstances. The vertical is not an escape from the noise – it is a way not to dissolve into it. If the horizontal is held by the tension of expectation, the vertical is held by the tension of direction. It is a composure in which every movement is measured not only by its result but by its correspondence to the inner axis.

In the Neoplatonic tradition – from Plato to Plotinus – the movement of the soul was thought of precisely as anagoge: an ascent to the One. But this ascent does not mean fleeing the world. It means not losing direction while being in it. The soul can act in the horizontal, but its center of gravity is shifted upward.

The vertical is a memory of the source. It has no chronology, for its movement is not sequential, but qualitative. It is not “after,” but “higher.” Not the next step, but a different depth of the same step. Living in the vertical means allowing every event to touch the inner core. Even the siren, even the anxiety, even the noise do not merely unfold in time, but test the direction: will you maintain your orientation? Will you allow the horizontal to consume you completely?

The vertical is not peace. It is an upward tension. Constant, barely perceptible, but unrelenting.

Coexistence: the intersection of modes.

A person cannot live in the vertical alone. Likewise, they cannot endure life solely in the horizontal. Pure movement forward without an inner axis is exhausting; pure direction upward without participation in events turns into abstraction.

Real life occurs at the point of their intersection.

The horizontal gives us a space for action. The vertical gives this action a dimension. The former answers the question “what is happening?”, the latter – “why does it matter?” In the horizontal, we react; in the vertical, we maintain direction. This becomes especially clear in times of catastrophe. A siren unfolds in the horizontal – it is a sound in time, a signal of danger, a sequence of minutes. But what happens inside belongs to the vertical. Is the axis preserved? Is the core crumbling?

When the horizontal becomes aggressive – overloaded with fear, information, and uncertainty – the vertical ceases to be a philosophical metaphor. It becomes a condition of integrity.

Living in two modes means not choosing between them, but allowing the horizontal to be the field and the vertical to be the direction. The movement happens forward, but the gravity is directed upward. It is precisely at the point of their intersection that presence is born. Without the vertical, “now” is merely a thin flash between the past and the future – a moment that instantly becomes a memory. With the vertical, “now” acquires depth: it ceases to be a transition and becomes a support. Not a second, but an inner dimension.

Presence is a space for silence within movement. Not an absence of events, but their collectedness. Not an escape from time, but living through it without dispersion.

Thinking is the work of maintaining the axis; a daily, almost imperceptible effort not to allow the horizontal to become the only dimension. The vertical is not imposed – it must be supported by every spoken word and every conscious step.

That is why the intersection of modes is not a theory. It is a state built from within – a quiet architecture of resilience where thinking finally becomes a home.

What does it mean to live in the vertical?
