Dialogue with Plotinus: Does the Axis Have a History?

27

From anagoge to enduring

Plotinus, you taught that the soul’s path is anagoge – an ascent from the scattered multiplicity of the sensory world to the absolute simplicity of the One. You proposed inner concentration as a way of deserting history, which for you was merely a fading echo of true Being. In your system, the Vertical is an elevator that lifts the subject above the noise of the horizontal, making them unreachable by the blows of fate.

However, today such a strategy reveals its ethical inadequacy. Anagoge, which radically separates itself from historical context, ceases to be an Axis and turns into a closed psychotechnique of tranquility. If your Vertical is directed exclusively upward, beyond the limits of time, then history itself becomes for it merely meaningless noise, and suffering – an ontological error. But our body does not know abstract levels of being; it knows time as an irreversible loss, as a tearing of tissues and meanings. Timeless metaphysics at the epicenter of decay becomes a form of intellectual amnesia: it offers wholeness at the cost of forgetting those who remained below, in the crack.

Witnessing through the crack

An Axis that does not pass through time is not an Axis – it is an illusion of stasis in a dynamic universe. True structure has a history, not because chaos is stronger than eternity, but because without historical content, eternity becomes an empty semantic sign. Consciousness has no right to ignore the very crack through which it is able to conceive light. It is precisely in this crack, at the point of historical rupture, that the strength of the metaphysical framework is tested.

The Vertical today is not a state of undisturbed peace of soul (ataraxia), but an extreme intensity of endurance. The center does not consist in closing one’s eyes to the periphery, but in becoming that point where the periphery ceases to be disorderly chaos and acquires the status of Experience. This requires abandoning the idea of escape. Thinking now is not an ascent above history to the safe heights of the Nous. It is the arduous, daily labor of holding the Axis within history itself, at the epicenter of destruction, where every blow of reality must be integrated into the structure, rather than cast aside as illusory.

Light refracted by pain

Your One, Plotinus, shines unchangingly. But we perceive this light not as an even radiance, but as flashes through the smoke of burning cities. A true Vertical is not a monolith, but a conductor vibrating under stress. It is enacted not in the moment of ecstasy, but in the moment when the subject says: “I see the decay, I feel its weight, and that is precisely why I continue to hold the direction.”

We do not return “Home” – we build a Home directly on the fault line. Eternity manifests not in the denial of time, but in the structure’s ability to withstand the pressure of time without turning into ash. This is true metaphysical courage: not to flee to the One, but to allow the One to manifest through your ability to be faithful to the structure in the heat of catastrophe.
