Extinguished, Yet Alive

100

Where night bends its sorrowful countenance to the sea,
And the moon cuts the black waves with silver,
I walk - a shadow of oblivion - a knife in my throat
That strikes the heart once, failing in the abyss.

O my heart - a banner burned down by fires,
It laughs at fate and weeps unconsoled,
I am exiled beyond the bounds of my own visions,
Where sin is honour, and honour - gardens of pain.

Youth was there, like wings, light and crimson,
It flew into my sorrow... a burning arrow,
But time threw on its dusty cloak and vanished at once,
And the wind merged with a voice, dissolving into night.

My love is a storm that curses and begs for peace,
It covers the soul with scalding and ruins all that is,
Yet I will not leave her - better an endless battle
Than to erase from memory a single echo of her.

And if the world tramples the strength of my hopes,
And if darkness comes - like a friend without words,
I will keep a fire in me, alien and fervent,
That shines on the dark - extinguished, yet alive.
